Private Client Services
Free conservation clinics and paid consultations are available to private clients. Clinics are currently held once a month for paintings, frames, and polychrome wood sculpture. During a clinic, individuals consult with conservators about their objects and their necessary care and possible conservation treatment. These consultations are arranged by appointment and are free of charge on our scheduled clinic days. In addition, consultation appointments, scheduled at the client’s convenience, can be made on other days for paintings, frames, polychrome wood sculpture, works on paper, and photographs. Please note: We do not offer market value appraisals nor do we authenticate works of art.

During a consultation, a BACC conservator will advise on any treatment or preservation issues related to the object under review. If a fairly straightforward treatment is recommended, the conservator may be able to provide the client with a written treatment proposal and estimated cost at the time of the consultation.

In many cases an object may require a more thorough, laboratory-based condition assessment. If this is the case, the object will be examined and a written report on the examination and a treatment proposal will be sent to the client.

Private Client Fees
Consultations$60 per half hour
Contracted Services$110 per hour
ExaminationsVariable (usually run between $110 and $330)

The specific amount is specified on the authorization form that is signed by the client prior to examination. If the proposed treatment is authorized, the cost of the examination, report on condition, and proposal for treatment will be applied to the treatment cost. Otherwise, these items will be invoiced separately.

Even though our clinics and consultations are available to members of the public, our status as a nonprofit institution prevents us from performing treatments on objects for private clients unless they are individual members of BACC member institutions. If, after an initial consultation, a client wishes to have work performed by BACC, his or her museum membership must be verified. The client may join a member institution at BACC’s offices if not already affiliated with one. Please note: BACC member institutions receive scheduling priority. The Member Institutions listed below have asked BACC to provide services to their members in the following categories:
